The perfect home for my family on Long Island's south shore came with a list of must haves. For our purposes, an updated kitchen or baths, while a real bonus, were negotiable. Rather, it was location that was much more important. The perfect house had to be in walking distance from the train, Main Street and our house of worship.
Merrick is conveniently located 45 minutes from the City and it is well-known for its award-winning schools, There is easy access to highways, and, short distances (or walking) to transportation, shops, restaurants, houses of worship. Jewel Quinn Senior Community Services, Merrick Golf Course, Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve, (affectionately known as Merrick Mountain) and Merrick Cinemas are notable.
Merrick is a desirable place to settle down in Nassau County, Long Island and there are different neighborhoods to consider.
A New England Feel on Long Island's South Shore - Merrick Woods
Recognized for its New England feel, the section known as Merrick Woods, is extra popular with Buyers.
As we move into fall, mature trees, with brightly colored foliage, are a sight to be seen. The large piles of leaves that carpet the sidewalks bring back distant childhood memories of country outings with family.
Buyers tend to come to Merrick as young, married couples and stay a lifetime! They put down roots, start a family and become a vital part of the community. When their children grow up, they may leave temporarily to attend school and pursue job opportunities but, more often than not, once they marry, the children return once more to begin a new generation of homeowners.
The first large scale real estate development in Merrick were the "Gables" built south of Sunrise Highway. They were built by Joseph Frankel and William Fox, owner of Fox Film Corp which later became known as Twentieth Century Fox. Errol Flynn and Ed Begley, Sr as well as Jr., are the most recognizable homeowners of that era.
In the summer of 2010, the HBO Miniseries "Mildred Pierce" was filmed at the Merrick Gables. The Civic Association supported this endeavor as a chance to publicize this lovely community. Kate Winslet and Melissa Leo were two of the big stars in this story about a housewife struggling to support her family during the Depression. The Gable homes were chosen because they looked similar to those found in Los Angeles in the 1930's. The stucco homes were built in the trendy Spanish style of the day.
