Can I Use Hardwood for my Kitchen Floor?
I'm no flooring expert.
So, if you're looking for expertise, please feel free to move on.
However, if you're thinking of putting down a hardwood floor in your kitchen, and you're open to anecdotal advice, from one who's currently there,
I'm your gal.
The house came with three types of flooring on the first level alone. From the doorway, you could see an old, cracked and pitted marble entry hall, white kitchen tiles and light wood living room/dining room floors.
Too many designs. At least, one too many. Two types of flooring is more than enough on any one level or it just feels disjointed.
I was after a unified look. I have nothing against tile, nor marble but I do prefer it for hot weather climates. Where it's colder most of the year, I gravitate towards something with a warmer look and feel.
So, I matched up my 3/4" inch red oak and stained it dark.
And now, everyone who comes to my home - and I mean everyone - says, "hardwood floors in the kitchen? Why didn't you use tile?"
Well, for starters, I was tired of tile. And for another, I had done my research.
While there's probably not all that much that you can do, if you have a pipe that bursts, under ordinary circumstances, it holds up rather well.
Oh, sure. If you have a pet, you're going to want to put something under the water bowl, and you'll need to clean those little messes as soon as possible. The idea is not to let them sit.
Perhaps, because I no longer have small children, I'm not finding it difficult at all to keep clean. I keep a small wash cloth, discreetly tucked into a corner, and if I happen to spray water from the kitchen sink, I drag the cloth over with my foot. Seconds later, problem solved.
Well, all but my dog's wiry hair. That one, I'm still working on.
The best part is, when the day comes that I need to have the floor resanded to remove scratches, dents or stains, or even to change color, I have 3/4" to work with. That's a plus you don't have with laminate or engineered wood.
