Buy What Makes You Smile
Long Island is aptly named. With so many neighborhoods to choose from - an estimated 198 divided between two counties - Nassau and Suffolk - how does an out-of-town buyer even begin to know where to start?
The answer lies in jotting down, early on, the lifestyle choices that matter to you.
And when - not if - you become overwhelmed, unless you're a professional investor or mature homebuyer, who has quite a bit of experience and knows exactly what he/she wants, please refer to this list, as often as necessary.
Some key items to keep in mind:
- Commute to work - so incredibly important because hours spent away from home will determine how much time you have left each day to spend with your loved ones, engaging in enjoyable activities.
- Community attributes - this is the unique aspect of a home search. Only you know what you need or want access to when you are not at work.
Options may include "walkability" or public transportation, parks and recreation, beaches, shopping, houses of worship etc.
Narrowing that confusing field of options can be time-consuming if you are truly starting from scratch. However, the process does work so give it a chance. In time, your face will light up at the mere mention of a community and afterwards, it's only a matter of choosing from homes that are currently on the market and fit your budget.
Try not to get too hung up on perfection because it doesn't exist. In the end, you will likely need to compromise, even if you are building that home with your own two hands!
Maybe, you've been dreaming of a home theatre but the properties you've toured don't offer one and available square footage has shouted a resounding "no." These, seemingly important, amenities don't really matter as much as you may think, in the scheme of things. Trends come and go and you'll probably tire of them quickly. Try to keep an eye on the big picture.
If you choose a community that's compatible with your lifestyle, I will personally guarantee your long-term satisfaction. Don't underestimate the simple pleasure of strolling to the local ice cream shop on a warm summer's night.
When you're searching for that perfect home, buy what makes you smile.
No matter how you spend your day, come home to this
