Freeport, NY - the 7th Coolest Town in the US

Great South BayZip code 11520 - Freeport, Long Island has been identified as one of the coolest places to live by travel website Matador Network.

Walkability along with diversity in population and a natural feature like the Great South Bay were important factors in the decision making process.

It's in great company with other notables like Laguna Beach, California (#3) and Sun Valley, Idaho (#5).

One perk is the Freeport Recreation Center which houses an ice rink, 5 swimming pools, a state-of-the-art gym and will be expanded in the coming months. The villages's downtown area will undergo a $200 million transformation according to Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy.

Freeport is also famously known for its Nautical Mile  - a collection of restaurants, many with live music, and suitable for young and old.

There are still great deals to be had as the area has mostly recovered from Superstorm Sandy and is poised to become the next big thing. Oceanwatch, new luxurious two-floor townhouses have become available in the $500,000 - $1,000,000 price range.

Perhaps it's the little things that make the biggest impression on  me. Carter's,  a children's clothing staple, has replaced the ubiquitous  .99 store in the Freeport outdoor mall on Sunrise Highway.

For sure, this is a sign of the times. Young families with little ones are moving in and enhanced services are in our future.

If you're drawn to the serenity of water, then the coastal town of Freeport is your answer to the question of affordability and quality of life.

Flood insurance is required if your property is on or by the water. This is a new normal that we need to make peace with.

Several years have passed since climate changes brought upon us a storm for the ages and many of us have come to understand and support FEMA regulations. It's an annual cost similar to the real estate taxes that we already pay and for the privilege of living on or by water, it's a necessity.
